How to Decoupage

Decoupage is the process of pasting paper on any object to make it look more beautiful. Modern decoupage is also called up-scaling. The paper is glued to the object in such a way that it looks as if it is painted.

Basic Kit for Decoupage

  • Decoupage tissue paper
  • Decoupage glue
  • Set of flat brushes
  • Acrylic colors
  • Gesso or White Acrylic paint

Steps to do Decoupage

For the first timer, decoupage is best done on an MDF board, size of a coaster. It gives enough surface area to work on. Longest time taken is to dry up. So a coaster of size 4 inch by 4 inch should just suffice.

Ensure the surface of the board is clean of any dirt. Apply a coat of decoupage glue evenly across the whole area. Using a thin brush and water draw a square the size of the coaster on the decoupage paper. Tear the paper along the water line. Place the torn paper on the coaster and flush it on with the brush. Apply another coat of decoupage over the paper and on the edges and allow it to dry. Your decoupage work of art is ready. Final touches, you can apply a coat of paint on the edges.

Decoupage on glass bottle

Glass as a material is smooth. So decoupage glue might not stick on glass so easily. So we first apply a layer of gesso. This layer gives the necessary rough surface to further decoupage the glass bottle. Glass bottles are the best left over items in the household. It can be easily converted to attractive decorative and even gifting options.
